WHAT ARE THE TRAITS OF A MODERN EMPLOYEE?
It is important to recognise that even though Millennials are the generation that have grown up with technology ‘built-in’ as part of their lives and not as a ‘bolt-on’ later in life like older generations, the rate of adoption of new technology and as a result new ways of doing things, is increasing irrespective of the demographic. This illustrates that there is a much wider change in mindset happening amongst modern employees that is not just the preserve of Millennials. This small but important distinction needs to be considered by any forward thinking business to help them understand the changing needs of a modern workforce so they can remain relevant. DEFINING THE MODERN EMPLOYEE
When trying to define anyone or anything, there is never going to be a one size fits all answer. However, if you ask the right questions to enough people and really look at the data, you start to uncover trends that can help explain things in a way that is easier to understand and starts to make sense. Adopting skills widely used in marketing to define target audiences and what motivates them, to interrogate the results from the Millennial Mindset survey, analysis of opinion and a review of other independent research, allows a definition to be made of what the traits of a modern employee are.

This process has allowed the modern employee to be distilled down into three key values that are responsible for driving core behaviours. This will not be correct for everyone and may evolve as time progresses but it is a fair and accurate representation of the modern employee with a Millennial Mindset at their core and who embraces technology. Business leaders need to understand who modern employees are and adapt their business model and corporate culture in order to attract and retain new talent to fuel the future of their business. Below is a summary of all the key values and subsequent behaviours of the modern employee. If you want to know more about the individual elements that lead to this definition, please view the Millennial Mindset survey and Impact of Technology pages.
